Virginia Cedarwood Essential Oil (Juniperus virginiana)
Origin: Native to eastern North America, found widely across the eastern United States from the Great Lakes region south to the Gulf of Mexico. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood, stumps, and sawdust of the Eastern red cedar, which belongs to the Cupressaceae (cypress) family. Despite being commonly known as "cedarwood," Juniperus virginiana is botanically a juniper, not a true cedar. It is the most widely produced cedarwood oil in North America and is distinct from both Texan cedarwood (Juniperus ashei) and Himalayan cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), each having different chemical profiles and scent characteristics. Virginia cedarwood has been used in aromatic traditions for centuries by indigenous North American peoples and has a deeply established place in American perfumery and natural product making.
Scent: Warm, soft, and sweetly woody with a smooth, balsamic, slightly resinous character. Gentle and refined – there's a distinctive, pencil-like, dry woody quality balanced by a subtle, honeyed, almost creamy warmth. Faintly smoky and earthy with a delicate, green, herbaceous undertone. Softer, smoother, and sweeter than Texan cedarwood, with a more polished, rounded character. Elegant, grounding, and long-lasting – a classic, versatile wood scent that is one of the most widely used and recognised in perfumery.
Uses:
- A staple of natural perfumery – one of the most widely used and versatile woody base materials, adding warm, smooth, woody depth and longevity to blends
- A classic addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, woody, grounding atmosphere to any space
- Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its smooth, classic wood character
- Used in natural household products for its warm, clean, woody scent profile
- Blends beautifully with sandalwood, vetiver, frankincense, bergamot, lavender, rose, patchouli, juniper, ylang ylang, and citrus oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for woody, earthy, masculine, oriental, and fougère compositions
- An excellent fixative in blending – helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils in a composition
