Vetiverol ex Vetiver Haiti — Vetiver's Most Precious Secret

There is vetiver — and then there is vetiverol. The distinction matters enormously to anyone who has worked with both. Where vetiver oil in its full complexity is smoky, earthy, rooty, and occasionally harsh at high concentrations, vetiverol is what lies at the heart of that oil after molecular distillation removes the harsher volatile components: a natural isolate of the vetiver alcohols — sweeter, softer, cleaner, and in many ways more beautiful than the full oil — while retaining all of vetiver's extraordinary tenacity and fixative power. It is vetiver without the dirt, as one perfumer memorably described it. The earthiness is gone; the precious woody-rooty beauty remains.

This vetiverol is extracted from the finest Haitian vetiver oil — Haiti producing the most celebrated vetiver in the world for its distinctive grapefruit-citrus freshness and complex woody depth. It is the same type of material used by Ernest Beaux when he created Chanel No. 5, and by Jean Paul Guerlain in the creation of Guerlain's iconic Vetiver — two of the most celebrated fragrances in the history of fine fragrance, both benefiting from exactly this material. Despite the name, vetiverol is not a single alcohol but the name given to the natural mixture of vetiver alcohols present in the oil — a complex and beautifully balanced material that is completely unrestricted in IFRA use across all application categories.

Scent Profile

The opening is clean, slightly woody, and immediately recognisable as vetiver family — but softer and more approachable than the full oil, with the characteristic rooty smokiness refined into something more luminous and transparent. A subtle grapefruit-like freshness from the Haitian origin adds brightness at the top, giving the material a lift that the full oil's earthiness tends to obscure. The heart is warm, dry, and woody — precious and refined, with a quality that experienced perfumers describe as the finest aspect of vetiver freed from its rougher companions. The drydown is extraordinarily long — well over 360 hours on a smelling strip — a remarkable fixative of great elegance that anchors compositions with quiet, unobtrusive authority.

Perfumery Applications

Vetiverol is one of the great natural fixatives — its combination of refined vetiver character, exceptional tenacity, and complete IFRA freedom making it invaluable across virtually every fragrance family. Unlike the full vetiver oil, its softness and transparency allow it to be used at higher concentrations without dominating a composition — it enriches rather than overwhelms, deepens rather than darkens.

It is a perfect material for adding vetiver character to compositions where the earthiness of the full oil would be unwelcome — light florals, fresh colognes, and feminine compositions that need vetiver's tenacity without its full aromatic weight. Used alongside our Vetiver Bourbon oil it creates a multi-dimensional vetiver accord of extraordinary depth — the isolate brightening and refining the full oil's smoky character into something of exceptional beauty. At average use around 2% in a perfume compound it functions as an outstanding fixative; at higher concentrations it becomes an explicit vetiver note of unusual refinement.

Blending Suggestions

Pairs beautifully with our Vetiver Bourbon oil for a complete vetiver accord. Beyond that, exceptional alongside bergamot, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedarwood, rose absolute, jasmine, ylang ylang, patchouli, labdanum, frankincense, clary sage, geranium, and soft musks. The combination with bergamot and sandalwood produces a refined, luminous woody accord of great elegance.

Great product the oil is thick and smells faithfully like a robust Vetiver

Great material. It provides a deep masculine warmth and body to a composition without bringing the usual earthy, sharp or damp qualities that many Vetiver materials tend to have. I see this as a warm woody note rather than a Vetiver which is useful if you want it to add depth and woody richness without taking over the fragrance and imparting that very unique character most Vetiver oils tend to bring.
