Vetiver Essential Oil (Chrysopogon zizanioides)
Origin: Native to India and Sri Lanka, now widely cultivated across Haiti, Indonesia, Réunion, and Madagascar. Haiti and Indonesia are among the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried, washed roots and rootlets of the vetiver grass, which belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family. Vetiver is sometimes referred to as the "oil of tranquility" in its native India and Sri Lanka. The quality and scent profile of vetiver oil varies significantly depending on its origin – Haitian vetiver tends to be smoother and sweeter, while Indonesian vetiver is often smokier and earthier. It has been a prized ingredient in perfumery for centuries and remains one of the most important and widely used base materials in both fine and artisan fragrance work.
Scent: Deep, earthy, and richly woody with a warm, smoky, balsamic character. Dense and complex – there's a distinctive, rooty, damp-earth quality layered with a soft, sweet, slightly caramel-like warmth. Subtly nutty and leathery with a faint, green, grassy undertone. Heavy, grounding, and remarkably long-lasting – a sophisticated, multifaceted scent that develops and evolves over time. One of the deepest, most tenacious oils available.
Uses:
- A cornerstone of natural perfumery – one of the most important and widely used base materials, adding depth, richness, and exceptional longevity to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a deep, warm, earthy atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its rich, complex, woody character
- Blends beautifully with sandalwood, cedarwood, frankincense, patchouli, bergamot, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, lavender, and citrus oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for woody, oriental, earthy, chypre, and masculine compositions
- An excellent fixative in blending – helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils in a composition
