Texan Cedarwood Essential Oil (Juniperus ashei)

Origin: Native to the south-central United States, primarily found across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. Texas is the most notable source, where the tree grows abundantly across the Edwards Plateau and Hill Country regions. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood, stumps, and branches of the Ashe juniper, which belongs to the Cupressaceae (cypress) family. Despite being commonly known as "Texas cedar" or "Texan cedarwood," Juniperus ashei is botanically a juniper, not a true cedar. It is distinct from both Virginia cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) and Himalayan cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), each having different chemical profiles and scent characteristics. Texan cedarwood has a long-established place in the American essential oil industry and is widely used in perfumery and natural product making.

Scent: Warm, dry, and richly woody with a soft, smoky, slightly sweet character. Bold and assertive – there's a distinctive, pencil-like, resinous sharpness balanced by a gentle, balsamic warmth. Subtly earthy and leathery with a faint, green, herbaceous undertone. Drier and more rugged than Virginia cedarwood, with a raw, rustic quality that evokes the Texas Hill Country landscape. Full-bodied, grounding, and long-lasting – a classic, robust wood scent with a distinctive American character.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, dry, woody base – adds a rugged, earthy depth and smoky warmth to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, woody, grounding atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, classic wood character
  • Blends well with vetiver, sandalwood, frankincense, bergamot, lavender, patchouli, juniper, rosemary, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for woody, earthy, masculine, and rustic compositions
  • An excellent fixative in blending – helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils in a composition
