Star Anise Essential Oil (Illicium verum)
Origin: Native to southern China and northern Vietnam. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried, star-shaped fruits of the tree, which belongs to the Schisandraceae family. Star anise has been traded along ancient spice routes for thousands of years and has a long history in perfumery and aromatic traditions. The distinctive star-shaped fruit typically contains eight seed pods, each contributing to the oil's rich, aromatic profile.
Scent: Warm, sweet, and intensely liquorice-like with a rich, spicy depth. Bold and aromatic with a smooth, slightly balsamic quality. Dense and lingering, with a faint peppery edge beneath the dominant anise sweetness.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, sweet, spicy accent — adds richness and intrigue to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, inviting atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, aromatic character
- Blends well with lavender, orange, fennel, cedarwood, frankincense, cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for oriental, spicy, and gourmand compositions
