Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil (Santalum paniculatum)

Origin: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, found across the volcanic slopes and dry forests of Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, and other islands. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of the Hawaiian sandalwood tree, which belongs to the Santalaceae (sandalwood) family. Known as ʻiliahi in the Hawaiian language, this species is one of several sandalwood varieties native to Hawaii. Hawaiian sandalwood has a deeply significant cultural history – it was heavily exploited during the 19th century sandalwood trade, which devastated wild populations. Today, production is carefully managed through sustainable plantation cultivation. It is distinct from Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) and Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), with its own unique scent profile and chemical composition.

Scent: Warm, soft, and sweetly woody with a creamy, smooth, balsamic character. Delicate and refined – there's a distinctive, honeyed, slightly floral warmth balanced by a subtle, green, earthy freshness. Faintly spicy and musky with a gentle, dry, nutty depth. Lighter, brighter, and more airy than Indian sandalwood, with a distinctive, tropical, sun-warmed quality. Elegant, nuanced, and long-lasting – a beautiful, unique sandalwood with its own gentle, luminous character.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, creamy, woody base – adds a soft, luminous warmth and gentle depth to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, refined, serene atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its delicate, elegant, woody character
  • Blends beautifully with rose, jasmine, bergamot, frankincense, vetiver, ylang ylang, neroli, cedarwood, patchouli, and vanilla oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for woody, floral, oriental, and luxury compositions
  • A distinctive alternative to Indian sandalwood for those seeking a lighter, brighter, more tropical sandalwood character
  • Historically significant in Hawaiian culture, valued for its deep, revered aroma
