Indian Rose Otto — Kannauj's Centuries-Old Distillation Heritage

Kannauj, in Uttar Pradesh, has been India's celebrated centre of traditional perfumery for centuries — a city where the art of hydro-distillation has been passed down through generations of master distillers, historically using the traditional deg-bhapka method to capture the true essence of India's finest botanicals. This Rose Otto continues that heritage, hydro-distilled at low temperature from freshly picked Rosa damascena petals grown on unpolluted, sustainable land in Northern India.

While the great rose-growing regions of Bulgaria and Turkey are rightly celebrated for their own distinct rose ottos, India's Kannauj tradition offers a genuinely different expression of Damask rose — shaped by different growing conditions, different harvest timing, and centuries of distinctly Indian distillation craft.

Rose otto is one of the most precious materials in the perfumer's palette. To make it more accessible, and easier to measure and blend, we supply it at 30% in our Natural TEC — a smooth, dropper-ready liquid that lets you work with genuine rose otto at a fraction of the cost of the neat oil.

Scent Profile

Deeply floral and opulent, with a sweet, creamy-honeyed rose character underpinned by light balsamic warmth and a subtle peppery spiciness — a distinctly different expression of Damask rose from the brighter, greener profiles typically associated with Bulgarian material. Rich and rounded, with genuine depth and a long, warm drydown.

Perfumery Applications

A cornerstone floral material for natural perfumery, adding luminous, honeyed rose depth to oriental, floral, and classical compositions. Even diluted, it is highly concentrated — a small amount goes a long way in blending.
