Indian Sandalwood Essential Oil (Santalum album)
Origin: Native to southern India, particularly the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. India has been the most renowned source of sandalwood for thousands of years. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of the sandalwood tree, which belongs to the Santalaceae (sandalwood) family. Indian sandalwood is a slow-growing, semi-parasitic tree that takes a minimum of 15–20 years to develop sufficient heartwood for oil production, with older trees producing the richest, most complex oil. Santalum album is considered the finest and most prized of all sandalwood species, distinct from Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) and other varieties. Due to decades of overharvesting, wild Indian sandalwood is now heavily regulated and protected by the Indian government. It has been one of the most revered aromatic materials in human history, with a deeply established place in perfumery, spiritual, and cultural traditions across Asia for thousands of years.
Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply woody with a soft, creamy, sweet character. Smooth and velvety – there's a distinctive, milky, buttery warmth layered with a subtle, rosy, almost floral depth. Faintly musky and balsamic with a gentle, earthy, slightly nutty undertone. Dense, rounded, and extraordinarily long-lasting – a classic, iconic wood scent of remarkable sophistication and complexity. One of the finest, most revered, and most recognisable scents in perfumery. Develops and deepens beautifully over time.
