Petitgrain Essential Oil (Citrus aurantium var. amara)
Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across Paraguay, France, Egypt, Tunisia, and other Mediterranean regions. Paraguay is the largest producer of petitgrain oil. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and small twigs of the bitter orange tree, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Petitgrain is one of three oils produced from the same tree - neroli is distilled from the blossoms and bitter orange oil is cold-pressed from the fruit peel. The name "petitgrain" originates from the French for "small grain," referring to the small, unripe fruits that were originally used in distillation. It has been a valued ingredient in perfumery since the 18th century and remains a staple in both fine and artisan fragrance work.
Scent: Fresh, green, and softly floral with a bright, woody, herbaceous character. Clean and elegant - there's a distinctive, sharp, citrusy-green brightness balanced by a warm, slightly balsamic, woody depth. Subtly bitter and dry with a faint, powdery, neroli-like sweetness. Refined, complex, and beautifully balanced - a versatile, sophisticated scent that sits between the freshness of a citrus oil and the depth of a woody-floral. Often described as neroli's greener, more understated cousin.
Uses:
- A staple of natural perfumery - adds a fresh, green, woody-floral quality and elegant brightness to blends
- A classic addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, clean, refined atmosphere to any space
- Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its versatile, clean, citrus-green character
- Used in natural household products for its fresh, bright scent profile
