Peru Balsam Essential Oil (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae)
Origin: Native to Central America, primarily El Salvador, which is the largest producer, also found across Honduras, Guatemala, and other parts of Central and South America. The oil is steam-distilled from the crude balsam resin, which is obtained by making incisions in the bark of the balsam tree. The tree belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Peru balsam takes its name from the historical trade route through Peru, despite not actually originating there. The resin has been used in aromatic traditions for centuries across Central American cultures and has a long-established place in European perfumery since the Spanish colonial era. It remains a valued and widely used material in both fine and artisan fragrance work.
In historical times Balsam of Peru was used in religious ceremonies of the Catholic Church as an anointing oil and in folklore it is said to attract wealth and happiness.
Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply balsamic with a sweet, vanilla-like, resinous character. Dense and velvety – there's a distinctive, soft, cinnamon-like warmth layered with a smooth, caramel-like sweetness. Subtly smoky and slightly spicy with a faint, woody, cocoa-like depth. Heavy, rounded, and remarkably long-lasting – a luxurious, enveloping scent with a warm, gourmand quality. One of the richest, sweetest, and most tenacious balsamic materials available.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a rich, warm, balsamic base – adds extraordinary depth, sweetness, and longevity to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, rich, enveloping atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its luxurious, sweet, balsamic character
- Blends beautifully with vanilla, frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, ylang ylang, rose, bergamot, cinnamon, patchouli, and vetiver oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for oriental, balsamic, gourmand, resinous, and amber compositions
- An excellent fixative in blending – helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils in a composition
