Orris Root Absolute (Iris florentina)
CAS Number: 8002-73-1 ; 90045-89-9
EINECS: 289-954-9
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, primarily cultivated in Italy (particularly Tuscany), France, and Morocco. Tuscany's San Polo area near Florence has been the most renowned source for centuries, giving the plant its common name. The absolute is solvent-extracted from the dried, aged rhizomes (roots) of the Florentine iris, which belongs to the Iridaceae (iris) family. Iris florentina is one of several iris species used to produce orris root products – others include Iris pallida (the most widely used) and Iris germanica. Like all orris root products, the rhizomes must be peeled, dried, and aged for a minimum of three to five years before extraction, during which time the characteristic violet-like scent compound (irones) slowly develops. This extraordinarily long maturation process, combined with a very low yield, makes Florentine iris absolute one of the rarest and most expensive aromatic materials in the world. It has been a treasured ingredient in Italian and French perfumery since the Renaissance and remains one of the most iconic and revered materials in fine fragrance.
Scent: Rich, powdery, and exquisitely floral with a soft, violet-like, earthy character. Deep and velvety – there's a distinctive, buttery, suede-like warmth balanced by a delicate, sweet, woody depth. Faintly rooty and carrot-like with a subtle, clean, almost metallic undertone. Subtly waxy and creamy with a gentle, iris-like, powdery elegance. Dense, complex, and extraordinarily long-lasting – a sophisticated, multifaceted scent of remarkable refinement. Iris florentina absolute tends to have a slightly warmer, more buttery, more earthy quality compared to Iris pallida, with a distinctive Tuscan character. One of the most prized and iconic materials in the history of perfumery.
