Helichrysum Essential Oil (Helichrysum italicum)

Also known as Immortelle

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, primarily cultivated in Italy (particularly Tuscany), Morocco, and parts of China. Italy's Tuscany region, especially the area around Florence, has been the most renowned source for centuries. Also known as Corsica and the Balkans (particularly Croatia and Bosnia). The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh flowering tops of the helichrysum plant, which belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Also known as Immortelle, everlasting flower, or Italian strawflower, the name "immortelle" (meaning "immortal" or "everlasting") refers to the flowers' remarkable ability to retain their colour and shape long after being dried. There are several species and subspecies of Helichrysum used in aromatic work, but H. italicum is the most prized and widely used in perfumery. Helichrysum is one of the most expensive essential oils due to its relatively low yield and the high demand from the fragrance industry.

Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply honeyed with a distinctive, complex, herbaceous-floral character. Layered and multifaceted – there's a sweet, curry-like, slightly spicy warmth balanced by a subtle, dry, hay-like, tea-like quality. Faintly fruity and earthy with a soft, woody, almost chamomile-like depth. Unique, intriguing, and remarkably long-lasting – a scent unlike any other essential oil, often described as simultaneously sweet, herbaceous, warm, and slightly burnt or caramelised. One of the most distinctive and recognisable scents in the essential oil world.

Uses:

  • Highly valued in natural perfumery as a unique, warm, honeyed accent – adds extraordinary complexity, depth, and an inimitable quality to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, rich, contemplative atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, complex, honeyed character
  • Blends beautifully with rose, lavender, bergamot, frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood, neroli, clary sage, geranium, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for floral, herbaceous, oriental, chypre, and luxury compositions
  • A rare and precious oil that adds a distinctive quality not achievable with any other single material
