Oregano Essential Oil (Origanum vulgare)

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, now widely cultivated across Turkey, Greece, Spain, Italy, Morocco, and parts of Central Asia. Turkey and Greece are among the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the oregano plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Origanum vulgare is distinct from sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana), which is a closely related but different species with a much softer, milder scent profile and very different chemical composition. There are also several chemotypes and subspecies of oregano, with the most common essential oil chemotype being high in carvacrol. Spanish oregano (Thymus capitatus) and Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) are sometimes marketed under the oregano name but are botanically unrelated species – accurate labelling is essential. Oregano has been valued in Mediterranean aromatic and culinary traditions for thousands of years.

Scent: Warm, sharp, and intensely herbaceous with a bold, spicy, pungent character. Powerful and immediately recognisable – there's a distinctive, phenolic, thyme-like warmth balanced by a subtle, green, camphoraceous brightness. Faintly earthy and woody with a dry, slightly bitter depth. Dense, hot, and remarkably long-lasting – a robust, commanding herbal scent with extraordinary intensity and strength. One of the most potent and concentrated essential oils available. Much stronger, sharper, and more pungent than sweet marjoram.

Uses:

  • Used in natural perfumery as a bold, herbaceous, spicy accent – adds a sharp, phenolic warmth and intense herbal depth to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends in very small quantities, bringing a warm, herbaceous, bracing atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, herbal character
  • Used in natural household products for its strong, fresh, herbaceous scent profile
  • Blends well with thyme, rosemary, lavender, bergamot, cedarwood, lemon, eucalyptus, frankincense, tea tree, and marjoram oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbaceous, Mediterranean, aromatic, and masculine compositions
  • An extremely potent oil – a very small amount goes a long way in any formulation
