Olive Leaf Absolute — The Green Soul of the Mediterranean
The olive tree is one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth — a symbol of the Mediterranean world for five thousand years. Its absolute, solvent extracted by H Reynaud Fils, established 1898, from the green and silvery leaves of Olea europaea cultivated in Egypt, occupies a unique position in the natural perfumer's green palette. Unlike galbanum or violet leaf, olive leaf brings something distinctly its own: a slightly bitter, olivaceous greenness with herbaceous and woody undertones that adds an authentic Mediterranean character impossible to achieve any other way.
Scent Profile
Green, herbaceous, and immediately evocative — the characteristic olive leaf signature is fresh and slightly bitter, with the distinctive scent of the living leaf rather than the fruit or oil. A slightly resinous, woody drydown grounds the green opening with quiet authority. Greenish-brown in appearance and mobile in consistency, it blends discreetly but contributes unmistakably.
Perfumery Applications
Olive leaf absolute is primarily a modifier and character note — a green accent that adds Mediterranean authenticity to compositions. It strengthens and deepens green accords, functioning particularly well alongside galbanum in marine and aquatic compositions. It contrasts beautifully with sweet floral materials — the bitterness of the olive leaf cutting through excessive sweetness and adding complexity.
Blending Suggestions
Pairs beautifully with galbanum, violet leaf, bergamot, lemon, neroli, rose absolute, jasmine, geranium, clary sage, cedarwood, sandalwood, oakmoss, labdanum, vetiver, and marine accords.
