Myrtle Essential Oil (Myrtus communis)
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, particularly found across Corsica, Sardinia, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, and other parts of southern Europe and North Africa. Corsica and Tunisia are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and small twigs of the myrtle shrub, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. There are two main chemotypes – green myrtle (ct. cineole), which is the most common, and red myrtle (ct. myrtenyl acetate), which has a distinctly different, softer scent profile. Myrtle has been revered since ancient Greek and Roman times as a symbol of love, peace, and immortality, and has a deeply established place in Mediterranean aromatic and perfumery traditions.
Scent: Fresh, clean, and softly herbaceous with a bright, slightly camphoraceous, eucalyptus-like character. Smooth and refined – there's a distinctive, sweet, green brightness balanced by a warm, balsamic, woody depth. Subtly floral and spicy with a faint, honeyed, tea-like undertone. Green myrtle is brighter, more fresh, and more cineole-forward, while red myrtle is softer, sweeter, and more rounded with a distinctive fruity warmth. Elegant, gentle, and beautifully balanced – a versatile, understated herbal scent that sits somewhere between eucalyptus and lavender, without the sharpness of either.
