Muhuhu — Brachylaena huillensis — is a towering hardwood tree of the montane forests of East Africa, reaching heights of up to 40 metres and among the largest members of the daisy family in the world. Historically prized for its dense, durable timber, its wood also yields a genuinely distinctive essential oil, steam distilled and long valued as a natural alternative to sandalwood in African perfumery traditions. The species is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to overharvesting pressure, making genuine, responsibly sourced muhuhu oil a genuinely rare find.

Scent Profile

Warm, woody, and quietly smoky — a soft, sandalwood-adjacent character with distinctive leathery and slightly medicinal facets that set it apart from more familiar wood oils. There is a dry, dusty warmth reminiscent of aged timber, developing into a smooth, understated base of genuine tenacity. Less sweet and creamy than Indian sandalwood, more grounded and rustic in character.
