Sweet Marjoram Essential Oil (Origanum majorana)

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, particularly Cyprus and Turkey, now widely cultivated across Egypt, France, Spain, Hungary, and North Africa. Egypt is one of the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried flowering tops and leaves of the sweet marjoram plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Sweet marjoram is distinct from wild marjoram or oregano (Origanum vulgare), which has a very different, much harsher chemical profile and scent. Often referred to as "knotted marjoram" due to its distinctive knotted flower clusters, sweet marjoram has been valued in aromatic and perfumery traditions since ancient Greek and Roman times.

Scent: Warm, sweet, and softly herbaceous with a gentle, woody, slightly spicy character. Smooth and rounded — there's a delicate, camphoraceous freshness balanced by a soft, nutty, almost tea-like warmth. Subtly floral with a faint, peppery, balsamic depth. Mellow, comforting, and beautifully understated — a refined, gentle herbal scent that is warmer, sweeter, and softer than oregano or thyme.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, herbaceous accent — adds a soft, rounded, herbal warmth and depth to blends
  • A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, gentle atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its soft, warm, herbal character
  • Blends beautifully with lavender, bergamot, cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, rosemary, orange, chamomile, and frankincense oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, aromatic, and warm compositions
