Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata)
Origin: Native to China and Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and other Mediterranean and subtropical regions. Italy is one of the most notable producers, particularly of the prized Italian mandarin. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind (peel) of the ripe fruit, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Mandarin oil is available in three varieties depending on the stage of harvest – green (unripe), yellow (semi-ripe), and red (fully ripe) – each with a slightly different scent profile. Red mandarin is the most common and sweetest, while green mandarin is sharper and more zesty. Mandarin has been used in aromatic traditions for centuries and holds a long-established place in perfumery.
Scent: Sweet, bright, and delicately citrusy with a warm, juicy, tangerine-like character. Soft and rounded – there's a gentle, honeyed sweetness balanced by a subtle, floral, almost neroli-like undertone. Slightly green and zesty with a faint, dry, peel-like depth. The red variety is the sweetest and most mellow, the yellow is balanced and versatile, and the green is the sharpest and most vibrant. Gentle, radiant, and universally appealing – a warm, comforting citrus scent that is softer and sweeter than most other citrus oils.
