Lime Essential Oil (Citrus aurantiifolia)
Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across Mexico, Brazil, Peru, the West Indies, and other tropical regions. Mexico is one of the largest producers. Lime oil is produced by two different methods – cold-pressed (expressed) from the rind of the fruit, and steam-distilled from the whole fruit or peel. The cold-pressed oil retains a brighter, more vibrant scent profile, while the distilled version is lighter and less complex. The lime tree belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Lime has been a valued ingredient in perfumery and aromatic traditions for centuries, prized for its sharp, zesty freshness.
Scent: Bright, sharp, and intensely citrusy with a fresh, zesty, tangy character. Clean and vibrant – there's a distinctive, tart, green brightness balanced by a subtle, sweet, candy-like undertone. Slightly bitter and peel-like with a faint, floral, almost petitgrain-like depth. Crisp, lively, and immediately recognisable – a bold, refreshing citrus scent that is sharper and more tart than lemon, with a distinctive green edge.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a bright, sharp citrus accent – adds a zesty, green freshness and lively energy to blends
- A popular addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, vibrant atmosphere to any space
- Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, fresh, citrus character
- Used in natural household products for its clean, bright scent profile
- Blends beautifully with lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, geranium, cedarwood, frankincense, basil, and ylang ylang oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for citrus, fresh, green, and tropical compositions
