Lemon Thyme Essential Oil (Thymus citriodorus / Thymus × citriodorus)

Origin: Native to southern Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region. Now widely cultivated across France, Spain, Portugal, and other parts of Europe. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the lemon thyme plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Thymus citriodorus is generally considered a natural hybrid between common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and large thyme (Thymus pulegioides). It is distinct from common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and its various chemotypes, with its own unique, citrus-forward scent profile characterised by higher levels of citral, geraniol, and citronellal. Lemon thyme has been valued in European culinary and aromatic traditions for centuries and has gained increasing recognition in perfumery and artisan fragrance work for its unique, fresh, herbaceous-citrus character.

Scent: Fresh, bright, and sweetly herbaceous with a distinctive, lemony, citrusy character. Lively and aromatic – there's a sharp, clean, citrus-like freshness balanced by a subtle, warm, thyme-like, slightly peppery depth. Faintly green and earthy with a delicate, floral, geranium-like undertone. Lighter, sweeter, and more citrusy than common thyme, without the heavy, phenolic, pungent quality of thymol-rich chemotypes. Vibrant, cheerful, and beautifully balanced – a refined, elegant herbal-citrus scent that bridges the freshness of lemon with the warmth of thyme.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a fresh, citrusy, herbaceous accent – adds a bright, lemony freshness and gentle, thyme-like warmth to blends
  • A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, clean, cheerful atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, fresh, lemon-herb character
  • Used in natural household products for its bright, clean, herbal scent profile
  • Blends well with lavender, rosemary, bergamot, lemon, geranium, cedarwood, frankincense, eucalyptus, clary sage, and orange oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for fresh, herbaceous, citrus, green, and Mediterranean-inspired compositions
  • A softer, more citrusy alternative to common thyme for those seeking a lighter, brighter, less pungent herbal quality
