Lemon Tea Tree Essential Oil (Leptospermum petersonii)

Origin: Native to Australia, primarily found in the subtropical coastal regions of New South Wales and Queensland. Australia is the primary producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and terminal branches of the lemon tea tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Despite its common name, lemon tea tree is not a true tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) – it belongs to the Leptospermum genus, the same genus as manuka (Leptospermum scoparium), though it has a very different, citrus-forward scent profile. The common name reflects both its family relationship to tea tree and its distinctive lemony character. Lemon tea tree is characterised by high levels of citral (geranial and neral) and citronellal, giving it a bright, fresh, lemon-like scent. It has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery and artisan fragrance work as a distinctive, versatile Australian native oil.

Scent: Bright, fresh, and sharply citrusy with a clean, sweet, slightly herbaceous character. Vibrant and uplifting – there's a distinctive, bold, lemon-like freshness balanced by a subtle, green, slightly camphoraceous depth. Faintly floral and rosy with a delicate, earthy, tea-tree-like undertone. More citrusy and less camphoraceous than common tea tree, with a brighter, sweeter, more lemon-forward quality. Crisp, clean, and beautifully balanced – a distinctive, refreshing citrus-herbal scent that bridges the freshness of lemongrass with the clean, green character of the Australian bush.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a bright, citrusy, herbaceous accent – adds a fresh, clean, lemon-like brightness and gentle, green depth to blends
  • A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, bright, clean atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, fresh, citrus character
  • Used in natural household products for its bright, clean, fresh scent profile
  • Blends well with tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, bergamot, geranium, rosemary, cedarwood, peppermint, and frankincense oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for fresh, citrus, herbaceous, green, and clean compositions
  • A distinctive Australian native oil that offers a brighter, more citrusy alternative to common tea tree

Important Information:

  • For External Use Only
  • Despite its common name, lemon tea tree is not true tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) – it belongs to the Leptospermum genus. Ensure accurate botanical naming to avoid misleading customers
  • Lemon tea tree oil is high in citral and citronellal, which are known skin sensitisers – always dilute well with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin
  • May cause skin sensitivity – always perform a patch test before use
  • Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness – citral-rich oils can oxidise over time
