Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil (Backhousia citriodora)

Origin: Native to the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, primarily found in southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. Australia is the sole significant producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of the lemon myrtle tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Lemon myrtle is one of Australia's most iconic native aromatic plants and is often referred to as having the highest natural citral content of any known plant – typically 90–98% citral, significantly higher than lemongrass (70–80%) or lemon verbena (30–35%). This extraordinarily high citral concentration gives it an intense, pure, lemon-like character unmatched by any other natural material. Lemon myrtle has been used by Indigenous Australian peoples for generations and has a deeply established place in Australian aromatic and culinary traditions. It has gained rapidly increasing international recognition in perfumery, artisan fragrance work, and natural product making.

Scent: Intensely bright, fresh, and powerfully citrusy with a sweet, clean, effervescent character. Radiant and immediately arresting – there's a distinctive, pure, lemon-like freshness of extraordinary clarity and intensity, balanced by a subtle, sweet, slightly floral warmth. Faintly green and herbaceous with a delicate, sherbet-like, almost fizzy brightness. Subtly honeyed and balsamic with a gentle, soft, myrtle-like depth. Cleaner, sweeter, more intense, and more purely lemony than lemongrass, lemon verbena, or lemon essential oil. Vibrant, luminous, and beautifully concentrated – one of the most intensely citrusy natural materials in the world. A small amount delivers extraordinary impact.

Uses:

  • Highly valued in natural perfumery as an intensely bright, citrusy accent – adds an extraordinarily pure, luminous, lemon-like freshness and brilliant clarity to blends
  • A striking addition to diffuser blends in small quantities, bringing a fresh, bright, vibrant atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its intense, clean, citrus character
  • Used in natural household products for its powerful, bright, clean scent profile
  • Blends beautifully with eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, bergamot, lemongrass, geranium, cedarwood, frankincense, ylang ylang, and peppermint oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for citrus, fresh, green, Australian, and contemporary compositions
  • An extremely concentrated oil – a very small amount goes a long way in any formulation
  • Natural repellent properties make it useful in outdoor products and pest control blends

Important Information:

  • For External Use Only
  • Lemon myrtle oil has the highest natural citral content of any known plant (typically 90–98%) – citral is a significant skin sensitiser. Always use very sparingly and dilute well with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin. Maximum recommended dermal use level is typically very low
  • Due to its extremely high citral content, lemon myrtle oil is considerably more potent than lemongrass, lemon verbena, or lemon – use with appropriate caution and at much lower dilution rates
  • Not recommended for use on young children due to high citral content
  • May cause significant skin sensitivity and irritation if used undiluted or at excessive concentrations – always perform a patch test before use
  • Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness – citral-rich oils can oxidise over time, and oxidised oil is more likely to cause skin sensitivity
