Kunzea Essential Oil (Kunzea ambigua)
A lesser known and important essential oil
Origin: Native to Australia, primarily found across the coastal and bushland regions of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. Tasmania is the most notable producing region. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and terminal branches of the kunzea shrub, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Also known as tick bush or white kunzea, Kunzea ambigua is distinct from other Kunzea species such as Kunzea ericoides (kanuka), which is native to New Zealand. Kunzea is a relatively recent addition to the international essential oil market, first commercially distilled in the 1990s in Tasmania. It has gained steadily increasing recognition among artisan perfumers and blenders for its unique, versatile scent profile and distinctive Australian character.
Scent: Fresh, clean, and brightly herbaceous with a warm, spicy, slightly camphoraceous character. Lively and aromatic – there's a distinctive, eucalyptus-like freshness balanced by a subtle, sweet, peppery warmth. Faintly floral and woody with a delicate, green, tea-tree-like undertone. Lighter and more refined than eucalyptus, with a softer, sweeter, more complex quality. Crisp, vibrant, and beautifully balanced – a unique, versatile herbal scent that bridges the freshness of eucalyptus with the warmth of rosemary, without the sharpness of either.
