Kewra Essential Oil (Pandanus odoratissimus)
also known as Screw Pine
Origin: Native to South and Southeast Asia, particularly India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and parts of Polynesia. India is the most notable producer, especially the states of Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The oil is extracted from the fresh male flowers (spadix) of the screw pine, which belongs to the Pandanaceae (screw pine) family. Despite its common name, screw pine is not a true pine – it is a tropical plant with distinctive spirally arranged leaves. Kewra has been a deeply cherished aromatic material in Indian culture for centuries, with a particularly strong association with the attars of Kannauj. Kewra attar – produced by traditional hydrodistillation of the flowers into sandalwood oil – is one of the most prized and iconic Indian aromatic materials. The flower's intoxicating fragrance is strongest at night and during the monsoon season.
Scent: Sweet, rich, and intensely floral with a warm, honeyed, exotic character. Lush and heady – there's a distinctive, rose-like, slightly fruity sweetness balanced by a subtle, green, dewy freshness. Faintly spicy and musky with a delicate, creamy, almost coconut-like depth. Subtly powdery and balsamic with a gentle, earthy, woody undertone. Opulent, romantic, and remarkably long-lasting – a rare, captivating tropical floral scent that is often compared to a blend of rose, jasmine, and pandanus. One of the most iconic and revered fragrances in Indian perfumery tradition.
