Kanuka Essential Oil (Kunzea ericoides)

Origin: Native to New Zealand, found widely across both the North and South Islands, from coastal lowlands to mountainous regions. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and small branches of the kanuka tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Kanuka is closely related to manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) and the two are often confused, but they are botanically distinct species with different scent profiles and chemical compositions. Kanuka is one of the most abundant native trees in New Zealand and holds cultural significance in Māori tradition. It has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery and artisan fragrance work for its unique, delicate, New Zealand character.

Scent: Fresh, clean, and softly herbaceous with a gentle, sweet, slightly floral character. Light and refined – there's a subtle, green, tea-tree-like freshness balanced by a warm, honeyed, slightly woody depth. Faintly spicy and camphoraceous with a delicate, dry, balsamic undertone. Smoother, softer, and more gentle than manuka – an understated, elegant, herbaceous-woody scent with a distinctive, clean, antipodean character.
