Hyacinth Absolute (Hyacinthus orientalis)

Origin: Native to the eastern Mediterranean region and the Middle East. Now extensively cultivated in the Netherlands, which is the most renowned source for both ornamental and aromatic production. The absolute is solvent-extracted from the fresh flowers of the common hyacinth, which belongs to the Asparagaceae (asparagus) family – formerly classified under Liliaceae (lily) or Hyacinthaceae. This particular absolute is produced using a hexane-free organic extraction method, offering a cleaner, more environmentally responsible extraction process. Hyacinth flowers are extremely delicate and produce a very low yield, making genuine hyacinth absolute one of the rarest and most expensive floral materials in the world. The Dutch have been at the forefront of hyacinth cultivation since the 18th century, when "hyacinth mania" gripped the Netherlands, rivalling the earlier tulip craze. Hyacinth has been a treasured ingredient in fine perfumery for centuries, prized for its distinctive, intensely green, spring-like character.

Scent: Intensely green, sweet, and richly floral with a fresh, dewy, spring-like character. Lush and heady – there's a distinctive, sharp, green, almost piercing freshness balanced by a deep, sweet, honeyed, narcotic-like warmth. Faintly waxy and powdery with a subtle, spicy, clove-like undertone. Subtly aquatic and earthy with a delicate, balsamic, slightly rubbery depth. Bold, complex, and remarkably long-lasting – a powerful, deeply evocative floral scent that captures the essence of a spring garden in full bloom. One of the most intensely green, most immediately recognisable, and most emotionally evocative florals in perfumery. Unlike any other floral material, with a unique combination of green sharpness and honeyed sweetness.

Uses:

  • Highly prized in natural perfumery as a rare, intensely green, floral accent – adds an extraordinary, sharp, spring-like freshness and lush, honeyed depth to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends in very small quantities, bringing a fresh, green, spring-like atmosphere to any space
  • Used in artisan candle making and soap crafting for its exquisite, green, floral character
  • Blends beautifully with jasmine, narcissus, violet leaf, rose, neroli, bergamot, ylang ylang, sandalwood, cedarwood, and lily of the valley oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for floral, green, spring, chypre, and luxury compositions
  • A rare and precious material that adds a distinctive, intensely green, spring floral quality not achievable with any other single material
  • An extremely potent material – a very small amount goes an extraordinarily long way in any formulation
