Ho Wood Natural Isolate — Laevo-Linalool, the Rosewood Alternative
Rosewood oil was once the great source of natural linalool in perfumery, prized for a warm, woody-floral depth that no synthetic could match, until over-harvesting and CITES protection made it scarce and costly. Ho wood — the linalool chemotype of the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora — offers an elegant and sustainable alternative. This natural isolate, made by Payan Bertrand, is laevo-linalool at over 90% purity, separated from ho wood oil, with the trace components that give it its warmth.
It opens with the fresh, floral sweetness common to every linalool, then reveals a warm, slightly rosy character with genuine woody depth that persists through the entire drydown — a bridge from fresh top notes to the base.
Scent Profile
Fresh-floral and subtly rosy, with a terpenic brightness that softens into gentle woody undertones. Warmer, rounder and longer-lasting than synthetic linalool, with the characteristic woody-lavender nuance of the laevo form.
Perfumery Applications
A versatile heart-note building block for lavender, floral, citrus and woody-floral compositions. It lifts and rounds a blend that feels flat, adds natural warmth to citrus-floral accords, and works as a fixative for florals. A typical starting range is around 5-15% in a perfume compound. It is also a classic partner in authentic natural lavender accords.
Blending Suggestions
Pairs beautifully with lavender, bergamot, neroli, petitgrain, rose, geranium, ylang ylang, jasmine, sandalwood, cedarwood and soft musks, and with citrus oils for fresh compositions that last.
