Gingergrass Essential Oil (Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia)

Origin: Native to India, now also cultivated across Nepal, parts of Southeast Asia, and Brazil. India is the largest producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried grass (aerial parts) of the gingergrass plant, which belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family. Gingergrass is a specific variety of Cymbopogon martinii – var. sofia – and is distinct from palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii var. motia), which comes from the same species but is a different variety with a very different chemical profile and scent character. Palmarosa is dominated by geraniol, giving it a sweet, rosy quality, while gingergrass contains a more complex blend of compounds including perillyl alcohol, giving it a distinctly different, sharper, more herbaceous character. The two should not be used interchangeably or confused in labelling. Gingergrass has an established place in Indian aromatic traditions and has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery.

Scent: Warm, sharp, and freshly herbaceous with a dry, earthy, slightly ginger-like character. Bold and aromatic – there's a distinctive, green, grassy brightness balanced by a subtle, sweet, rosy warmth. Faintly peppery and woody with a gentle, citrusy, lemon-like undertone. Drier, sharper, and more herbaceous than palmarosa, with less floral sweetness and more of a raw, grassy, earthy quality. Vibrant, complex, and long-lasting – a distinctive, aromatic grass scent that bridges the freshness of lemongrass with the warmth of ginger, with its own unique character.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a fresh, herbaceous, grassy accent – adds a sharp, green brightness and an unusual, earthy warmth to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, warm, herbaceous atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, fresh, grassy character
  • Blends well with palmarosa, lemongrass, geranium, lavender, cedarwood, bergamot, frankincense, ginger, vetiver, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbaceous, green, fresh, and earthy compositions
  • A more herbaceous, drier alternative to palmarosa for those seeking a sharper, less floral grass scent
