Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium graveolens)
Origin: Native to South Africa, now widely cultivated across Egypt, China, India, Morocco, Réunion Island, and parts of Europe. Egypt is currently the largest producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of the geranium plant, which belongs to the Geraniaceae (geranium) family. Despite being commonly called "geranium," the essential oil is produced from the Pelargonium genus, not true geraniums (Geranium genus) – the two are related but botanically distinct. There are several named varieties of geranium oil in the trade, the most notable being Bourbon geranium (from Réunion Island), Egyptian geranium, and Chinese geranium, each with subtly different scent profiles influenced by terroir and cultivation methods. Rose geranium (Pelargonium cv. 'Rose') is a specific cultivar with a more pronounced rosy character. Geranium has been one of the most widely used and versatile oils in perfumery since the 19th century.
Scent: Sweet, green, and richly floral with a warm, rosy, slightly herbaceous character. Lively and complex – there's a distinctive, bright, rose-like sweetness balanced by a fresh, minty, green sharpness. Faintly fruity and citrusy with a subtle, earthy, slightly peppery depth. Warm, rounded, and beautifully balanced – a classic, versatile floral-herbaceous scent that bridges the worlds of rose and herb. Bourbon geranium tends to be softer and more rosy, Egyptian geranium brighter and more green, and Chinese geranium more herbaceous and lemony. One of the most versatile and widely used oils in perfumery.
