Geraniol ex Palmarosa — The Finest Natural Rose Alcohol
Geraniol is one of the four great rose alcohols — alongside phenyl ethyl alcohol, nerol, and citronellol — present in virtually every rose variety on earth, and a fundamental building block in the vocabulary of floral perfumery. But not all geraniol is created equal. Synthetic geraniol is widely available, inexpensive, and functional, but it lacks the richness and subtle complexity that distinguishes the natural isolate. Geraniol naturally isolated from palmarosa — the fragrant Indian grass from which it is extracted in abundance — is widely regarded as the finest quality available: possessing a warmth and character that synthetic versions simply cannot replicate.
This colourless, immediately pourable liquid is sourced from Ventos, one of the most respected natural ingredient specialists in Europe. It is the geraniol used in the finest classical bases — a material whose transparency belies extraordinary versatility and whose contribution to a composition is felt rather than explicitly heard.
Scent Profile
Sweet, floral, and rose-like at its core — the characteristic geraniol signature is bright and clean, with a freshness that lifts compositions without competing with more complex materials. Distinctive grassy-herbaceous undertones from its palmarosa origin add a naturalness and slight greenness that synthetic geraniol never achieves. Subtle citrus facets give it a brightness in the top notes, while a delicate spicy evolution on drydown adds quiet complexity. Longevity exceeds 60 hours on a smelling strip — substantial for a relatively light floral material.
Perfumery Applications
Geraniol is indispensable in fine fragrance — it forms the backbone of authentic rose accords alongside phenyl ethyl alcohol and citronellol, and its freshness and lift make it a universal brightener across virtually every fragrance family. A small addition adds natural vibrancy to compositions that might otherwise feel flat or synthetic.
In rose accords it provides the bright, slightly green-rosy freshness that gives the composition its natural character. In floral-green compositions it adds lift without overwhelming. In soap and skin care applications it is particularly effective, providing lasting natural freshness. Average use is around 2.5% in a perfume compound, though it can be used at considerably higher concentrations in rose-focused compositions.
IFRA 51: 4.75% in finished product (Category 4). Plan formulations accordingly.
