Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia frereana)

Origin: Native to the Horn of Africa, found exclusively in the northern regions of Somalia, particularly the Puntland and Sanaag areas. Somalia is the sole producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried resin (oleogum resin) of the frankincense tree, which belongs to the Burseraceae (frankincense/myrrh) family. The resin is harvested by making careful incisions in the bark, from which the sap exudes and hardens into pale, translucent, highly aromatic resin tears. Boswellia frereana is also known as Coptic frankincense, Maydi frankincense, or Yibir frankincense, and is considered by many to be the finest and most aromatic of all frankincense species. It is distinct from Somalian (B. carterii), Omani (B. sacra), Indian (B. serrata), and Ethiopian (B. papyrifera) frankincense, each having different chemical profiles and scent characteristics. B. frereana resin has been highly prized since ancient times

Scent: Bright, fresh, and elegantly resinous with a clean, citrusy, almost lemony character. Lighter and more refined than other frankincense species – there's a distinctive, crisp, terpenic freshness balanced by a soft, warm, balsamic sweetness. Subtly woody and slightly piney with a faint, honeyed, floral depth. Less smoky and less turpentine-like than B. carterii, with a cleaner, more transparent, almost sparkling quality. Luminous, elegant, and beautifully balanced – a bright, sophisticated frankincense scent that is often considered the most aromatic and refined of the Boswellia species.

Uses:

  • Highly valued in natural perfumery as a bright, elegant, resinous accent – adds a clean, luminous, citrusy freshness and refined balsamic depth to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, bright, contemplative atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its refined, bright, resinous character
  • Blends beautifully with myrrh, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, bergamot, lavender, rose, neroli, orange, and other frankincense species
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for resinous, woody, citrus, fresh, and luxury compositions
  • Historically associated with sacred and ceremonial traditions in the Horn of Africa, valued for its exceptionally pure, revered aroma
  • Pairs beautifully with other frankincense species for rich, layered, complex resinous blends
