Fennel Essential Oil (Foeniculum vulgare)
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, now widely cultivated across Europe, India, Egypt, and China. The oil is steam-distilled from the crushed seeds (fruit) of the fennel plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. There are two main varieties - sweet fennel (F. vulgare var. dulce) and bitter fennel (F. vulgare var. vulgare), with sweet fennel being the most commonly used in aromatic work. Fennel has been valued in aromatic and perfumery traditions since ancient Greek and Roman times.
Scent: Warm, sweet, and distinctly anise-like with a fresh, herbaceous brightness. Smooth and liquorice-rich with a soft, slightly peppery undertone. There's a green, earthy depth balanced by a gentle, honeyed sweetness. Clean, aromatic, and full-bodied - reminiscent of star anise but lighter, greener, and more herbaceous in character.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, sweet, herbaceous accent - adds an anise-like richness and freshness to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, aromatic atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, sweet, herbaceous character
- Blends well with lavender, geranium, sandalwood, rose, bergamot, lemon, cedarwood, and juniper oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, spicy, and oriental compositions
