Dragon Tree Essential Oil (Croton Lechleri)
(Also called Dragons Blood)
Origin: Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, primarily found across Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia. Peru and Ecuador are the most notable sources. The extract is obtained from the deep red latex/resin of the Dragon's Blood tree, which belongs to the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family. The resin is harvested by making incisions in the bark, from which a distinctive, dark red, viscous sap flows – its blood-like appearance giving rise to the common name "Sangre de Drago" (Dragon's Blood). Croton lechleri has been used by indigenous Amazonian peoples for centuries and holds deep cultural significance in South American traditions. The resin and its aromatic extract have gained increasing recognition in international perfumery and artisan fragrance work for their unique, complex character.
Scent: Deep, rich, and darkly resinous with a warm, earthy, slightly sweet character. Dense and complex – there's a distinctive, smoky, woody warmth balanced by a subtle, bitter, herbal freshness. Faintly spicy and leathery with a soft, balsamic, almost astringent depth. Subtly fruity and dry with a gentle, dark, amber-like undertone. Heavy, grounding, and remarkably long-lasting – a powerful, mysterious, primordial scent with extraordinary depth and complexity. Unlike any other resinous material available in perfumery.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a deep, dark, resinous accent – adds extraordinary depth, mystery, and an unusual, primordial quality to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a deep, warm, atmospheric quality to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, dark, resinous character – note that the resin may impart a reddish colour to products
- Blends well with frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, benzoin, oud, spikenard, and vanilla oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for resinous, dark, woody, oriental, and ritualistic compositions
- Historically associated with indigenous Amazonian traditions, valued for its deep, revered aroma
