Douglas Fir Essential Oil (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

Origin: Native to western North America, found extensively across the Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada, from British Columbia south through Washington, Oregon, and northern California, and extending into the Rocky Mountain regions. The United States and Canada are the primary producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the needles and young branches of the Douglas fir tree, which belongs to the Pinaceae (pine) family. Despite its common name, Douglas fir is not a true fir (Abies), nor a true pine (Pinus), nor a true spruce (Picea) – it is the sole member of its own genus, Pseudotsuga, meaning "false hemlock." The tree is named after Scottish botanist David Douglas, who first introduced it to European cultivation in the 19th century. Douglas fir is one of the tallest and most iconic trees in North America and has an established place in the aromatic traditions of the Pacific Northwest.

Scent: Fresh, bright, and cleanly coniferous with a sweet, citrusy, slightly resinous character. Lively and uplifting – there's a distinctive, crisp, green, needle-like freshness balanced by a soft, warm, balsamic sweetness. Subtly fruity and almost grapefruit-like with a faint, earthy, woody depth. Lighter, brighter, and more citrusy than most other conifer oils, with a distinctive, clean, sparkling quality. Fresh, vibrant, and beautifully balanced – an elegant, cheerful, forest scent that captures the essence of the Pacific Northwest woodland.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a fresh, bright, coniferous accent – adds a clean, citrusy, green freshness and gentle, balsamic warmth to blends
  • A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, clean, forest-like atmosphere to any space
  • Popular in candle making and soap crafting for its bright, clean, evergreen character
  • Used in natural household products for its fresh, clean, woodland scent profile
  • Blends beautifully with cedarwood, pine, spruce, juniper, bergamot, lavender, frankincense, cypress, lemon, and eucalyptus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for fresh, green, woody, forest, and masculine compositions
  • Pairs exceptionally well with other conifer oils for rich, layered, forest-inspired blends

Important Information:

  • For External Use Only
  • Despite its common name, Douglas fir is not a true fir (Abies) – it is a unique genus (Pseudotsuga).
  • Always dilute with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin
  • May cause skin sensitivity – always perform a patch test before use
  • Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness – conifer oils can oxidise over time, and oxidised oil is more likely to cause skin sensitivity
