Curry Leaf Essential Oil (Murraya koenigii)

Origin: Native to the Indian subcontinent, primarily found across India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. India is the largest producer, particularly the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh or dried leaves of the curry leaf tree, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Despite sharing a common name with curry powder, the curry leaf tree is unrelated to the spice blend – it is in fact a member of the same botanical family as citrus fruits and is closely related to the ornamental orange jasmine (Murraya paniculata). Note that Murraya koenigii has been reclassified by some authorities as Bergera koenigii, though the former name remains far more widely used in the essential oil trade. Curry leaves have been deeply valued in Indian culinary and aromatic traditions for thousands of years and the essential oil has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery for its unique, complex character.

Scent: Warm, sharp, and intensely herbaceous with a complex, spicy, slightly citrusy character. Bold and aromatic – there's a distinctive, pungent, green, curry-like warmth balanced by a subtle, sweet, almost fruity brightness. Faintly peppery and camphoraceous with a soft, earthy, woody depth. Subtly nutty and balsamic with a delicate, roasted, slightly smoky undertone. Dense, vibrant, and long-lasting – a powerful, unique, deeply savoury herbal scent unlike any other essential oil. One of the most distinctive and immediately recognisable aromatic materials from the Indian subcontinent.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a bold, herbaceous, spicy accent – adds a distinctive, savoury warmth and unusual, pungent complexity to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends in small quantities, bringing a warm, herbaceous, aromatic atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, bold, spicy character
  • Blends well with ginger, cardamom, frankincense, bergamot, lemon, cedarwood, vetiver, coriander, black pepper, and sandalwood oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for spicy, herbaceous, oriental, and exotic compositions
  • An unusual and underappreciated oil that adds a distinctive, savoury quality not achievable with any other material
  • An extremely potent oil – a small amount goes a long way in any formulation
