Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia sclarea)

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region and Central Asia, now widely cultivated across France, Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, England, and parts of North America. France and Russia are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of the clary sage plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Clary sage is distinct from common sage (Salvia officinalis), which has a very different chemical profile and scent character. The name "clary" is believed to derive from the Latin "clarus" meaning "clear." Clary sage has been valued in European aromatic and perfumery traditions since medieval times and remains one of the most widely used and versatile oils in natural perfumery and artisan fragrance work. It is also the primary natural source of sclareol, a compound highly valued in the fragrance industry.

Scent: Warm, sweet, and richly herbaceous with a soft, floral, slightly musky character. Smooth and enveloping – there's a distinctive, wine-like, almost intoxicating warmth balanced by a subtle, fresh, green, tea-like brightness. Faintly nutty and earthy with a gentle, hay-like, balsamic depth. Subtly fruity and amber-like with a delicate, lavender-like undertone. Full-bodied, complex, and long-lasting – a unique, sophisticated herbal scent that bridges the worlds of herbaceous and floral, often described as simultaneously warm, sweet, dry, and gently musky.

Uses:

  • Highly valued in natural perfumery as a warm, sweet, herbaceous accent – adds a distinctive, wine-like warmth, gentle muskiness, and refined complexity to blends
  • A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, soft, enveloping atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its rich, warm, herbal character
  • Blends beautifully with lavender, bergamot, frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, geranium, rose, neroli, juniper, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, floral, chypre, fougère, and oriental compositions
  • A natural source of sclareol, a compound widely used in the fragrance industry as a fixative and ambergris alternative
  • An exceptionally versatile blending oil that adds warmth, depth, and smoothness to a wide range of compositions
