Chinese Rice Flower CO₂ Extract — A Rare Tea-Time Floral from Southern China
Aglaia odorata is a small tree found across southern China and Southeast Asia, its tiny, densely clustered yellow flowers so intensely fragrant that they have been used for centuries in Chinese tradition to scent tea, particularly the celebrated Ju Hua Cha and other blended teas. Known as the Chinese Perfume Plant or Chinese Rice Flower, its blossoms are so small and so precious that obtaining any meaningful aromatic material from them is genuinely difficult — making this CO₂ extract a rare and distinctive addition to the natural perfumer's palette.
Gentle CO₂ extraction captures the delicate flower's aromatic character with remarkable fidelity to the living blossom — something more forceful extraction methods often fail to preserve. The result is a light yellow, concentrated extract offering an unusually sophisticated floral profile, sweet and distinctive without ever becoming heavy.
Scent Profile
The opening is rich yet ethereal — a floral sweetness with juicy nuances reminiscent of ripe peach and pear. As it develops, refined green tea notes emerge gradually, joined by delicate impressions of jasmine, ylang ylang, and osmanthus, alongside soft hay and fresh green facets. The overall impression is exotic and sophisticated — a floral character genuinely distinct from Western white florals, with a tea-time elegance that speaks of its traditional use scenting fine Chinese teas.
Perfumery Applications
Chinese Rice Flower CO₂ Extract brings luminosity, elegance, and an unusual East Asian botanical character to floral compositions. It softens woody and resinous accords, enriches tea-inspired perfumes with real botanical authenticity, and adds a delicate fruity dimension to white florals, citrus notes, and amber bases. Its refined character makes it particularly well suited to sophisticated unisex fragrances and to compositions seeking something genuinely different from the more familiar floral palette.
Blending Suggestions
Pairs beautifully with green tea absolute, white tea absolute, jasmine, ylang ylang, osmanthus, bergamot, orange blossom, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, and soft musks.
