English (Roman) Chamomile Essential Oil (Chamaemelum nobile)
Origin: Native to western Europe, particularly England, France, and the Iberian Peninsula. Now widely cultivated across England, France, Hungary, Italy, and parts of North America. England and France are the most renowned producing regions. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh or dried flowering tops of the chamomile plant, which belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Also known as Roman chamomile or garden chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile is distinct from German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), which has a very different chemical profile, scent character, and the distinctive deep blue colour caused by chamazulene. English chamomile has been one of the most beloved aromatic plants in European herbalism and perfumery for centuries, with a particularly deep cultural association with the English garden tradition.
Scent: Sweet, warm, and softly fruity with a fresh, herbaceous, apple-like character. Gentle and refined – there's a distinctive, bright, slightly green freshness balanced by a warm, honeyed, hay-like depth. Subtly floral and earthy with a faint, sweet, tea-like undertone. Lighter, sweeter, and more fruity than German chamomile, without the heavy, inky, herbaceous quality of its blue counterpart. Smooth, rounded, and beautifully approachable – a classic, comforting, gentle herbal scent with a distinctive, warm, apple-blossom sweetness.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a sweet, fruity, herbaceous accent – adds a gentle, warm, apple-like softness and delicate complexity to blends
- A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a soft, warm, gentle atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its sweet, comforting, herbal character
- Blends beautifully with lavender, bergamot, rose, geranium, clary sage, neroli, sandalwood, cedarwood, ylang ylang, and citrus oils

- Distinct from German chamomile – offers a lighter, sweeter, more fruity alternative for blending
