Cardamom Essential Oil (Elettaria cardamomum)
Origin: Native to southern India and Sri Lanka, now widely cultivated across Guatemala (the largest producer), India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and other tropical regions. Guatemala and India are the most notable sources. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried seeds (removed from their pods) of the cardamom plant, which belongs to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. Elettaria cardamomum is known as green cardamom or true cardamom and is distinct from black cardamom (Amomum subulatum), which is a different genus and species with a very different, smoky, camphoraceous scent profile. Often referred to as the "Queen of Spices," cardamom is one of the world's oldest and most prized spice crops, with a history of use dating back thousands of years across Indian, Middle Eastern, and Scandinavian cultures. It has a deeply established place in perfumery and aromatic traditions worldwide.
Scent: Warm, sweet, and richly spicy with a fresh, aromatic, slightly camphoraceous character. Complex and multilayered – there's a distinctive, bright, eucalyptus-like freshness balanced by a soft, warm, balsamic sweetness. Faintly floral and citrusy with a subtle, woody, resinous depth. Subtly peppery and green with a delicate, almost lemony, tea-like undertone. Smooth, elegant, and beautifully balanced – a sophisticated, refined spice scent that is at once warm and fresh, sweet and sharp. One of the most complex and versatile spice oils available in perfumery.
