Caraway Essential Oil (Carum carvi)
Origin: Native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, now widely cultivated across the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Egypt, and Scandinavia. The Netherlands is one of the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried, ripe seeds (fruit) of the caraway plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. Caraway is one of the oldest known aromatic plants in Europe, with archaeological evidence of its use dating back thousands of years. It has a long-established place in perfumery and aromatic traditions.
Scent: Warm, sweet, and distinctly spicy with a rich, earthy, slightly anise-like character. Bold and aromatic - there's a sharp, peppery brightness balanced by a soft, honeyed, balsamic warmth. Subtly woody with a faint, dry, herbaceous undertone. Full-bodied, complex, and immediately recognisable - a distinctive, rounded spice scent with a warm, lingering finish.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, spicy accent - adds a distinctive, aromatic richness and depth to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, spicy atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, aromatic character
- Blends well with orange, lavender, frankincense, cardamom, ginger, cedarwood, coriander, and chamomile oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for spicy, herbal, oriental, and gourmand compositions
