Cananga Essential Oil (Cananga odorata var. macrophylla)

Origin: Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh flowers of the cananga tree, which belongs to the Annonaceae (custard apple) family. Cananga is closely related to ylang ylang (Cananga odorata var. genuina) and is sometimes confused with it, but they are distinct varieties that produce oils with different scent profiles and chemical compositions. Cananga oil is produced in larger quantities and is more affordable than ylang ylang, as it undergoes a single, unfractionated distillation rather than the graded distillation process used for ylang ylang. It has a long history of use in aromatic traditions across Southeast Asia and an established place in perfumery and natural product making.

Scent: Sweet, floral, and warmly exotic with a soft, woody, herbaceous character. Rich and heady – there's a distinctive, jasmine-like sweetness balanced by a dry, green, slightly spicy undertone. Subtly earthy with a faint, powdery, balsamic depth. Fuller-bodied and rougher than ylang ylang – less refined and delicate, but with a bolder, more robust, earthy-floral warmth. A lush, generous scent with a distinctive tropical character.

Uses:

  • Used in natural perfumery as a sweet, exotic floral accent – adds warmth, depth, and a lush, tropical quality to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, floral atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, sweet, floral character
  • A more affordable alternative to ylang ylang in large-batch crafting and natural product making
  • Blends well with bergamot, sandalwood, cedarwood, jasmine, rose, vetiver, patchouli, lavender, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for floral, oriental, tropical, and exotic compositions
