Cajeput Essential Oil (Melaleuca cajeputi)
Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and northern Australia. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh leaves and twigs of the cajeput tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Cajeput is a close relative of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia), but produces a distinctly different oil with its own unique scent profile. The name "cajeput" derives from the Malay "kayu putih," meaning "white wood," referring to the tree's distinctive pale bark. It has a long history of use in aromatic traditions across Southeast Asia.
Scent: Fresh, clean, and strongly camphoraceous with a bright, eucalyptus-like quality. Sharp and penetrating - there's a cool, minty brightness balanced by a soft, fruity, slightly sweet undertone. Subtly herbaceous with a faint, warm, woody depth. Bold, clear, and immediately recognisable - similar to eucalyptus and tea tree but with a softer, sweeter, more rounded character.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a fresh, camphoraceous accent — adds a clean, bright, aromatic quality to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, clean atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its strong, clean, herbaceous character
- Used in natural household products for its fresh, sharp scent profile
- Blends well with eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, cedarwood, bergamot, lemon, peppermint, and clove oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for fresh, herbaceous, and aromatic compositions
