Cade Essential Oil / Rectified (Juniperus oxycedrus)

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, found widely across southern France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East. France and Spain are the most notable producers. The oil is obtained by dry distillation (destructive distillation/pyrolysis) of the heartwood and branches of the prickly juniper, which belongs to the Cupressaceae (cypress) family. Cade oil is produced through a very different process from most essential oils – rather than steam distillation, the wood is slowly heated in the absence of air, producing a thick, dark, tarry oil with a distinctive smoky character. A rectified (redistilled) version is also available, which is lighter, cleaner, and more suitable for perfumery and cosmetic use. Juniperus oxycedrus is distinct from common juniper (Juniperus communis) and cedarwood junipers (Juniperus virginiana, Juniperus ashei), each having very different scent profiles. Cade oil has been used in Mediterranean aromatic traditions for centuries and has an established place in perfumery, particularly in leather and smoky compositions.

Scent: Deep, dark, and intensely smoky with a rich, tarry, woody character. Bold and powerful – there's a distinctive, creosote-like, campfire warmth balanced by a subtle, dry, leathery depth. Faintly sweet and balsamic with a gentle, earthy, phenolic undertone. Dense, raw, and remarkably long-lasting – a primal, elemental scent that evokes wood smoke, charred timber, and ancient hearths. Rectified cade oil is cleaner, lighter, and more refined, with less of the crude, tarry heaviness and a smoother, more versatile smoky character. One of the most distinctive and powerful smoky materials available in perfumery.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a dark, smoky, leathery accent – adds extraordinary depth, smokiness, and a raw, primal quality to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends in very small quantities, bringing a deep, warm, smoky atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, smoky, campfire-like character
  • Blends well with vetiver, birch tar, labdanum, frankincense, cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, bergamot, oud, and vanilla oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for leather, smoky, woody, dark, and masculine compositions
  • A classic ingredient in leather accords and smoky compositions in fine and artisan perfumery
  • A little goes a very long way – cade oil is extremely potent and should be used sparingly in blending
