Brazilian Cypriol Essential Oil (Cyperus articulatus)
Origin: Native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, primarily Brazil, where it is found in the wetlands, riverbanks, and floodplains of the Amazon Basin. Also found across parts of Central America, West Africa, and Southeast Asia. Brazil is the most notable source for aromatic production. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried rhizomes (roots) of the priprioca plant, which belongs to the Cyperaceae (sedge) family. Also known as priprioca, piriprioca, or jointed flatsedge, Cyperus articulatus has been used by indigenous Amazonian peoples for centuries in aromatic preparations, perfumed baths, and ceremonial traditions. It is closely related to Indian cypriol/nagarmotha (Cyperus scariosus) and papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), but is a distinct species with its own unique scent profile and chemical composition. Brazilian cypriol has gained significant recognition in international perfumery in recent years, particularly within the Brazilian fragrance industry, where it is celebrated as one of the country's most distinctive native aromatic materials.
Scent: Deep, rich, and warmly woody with a complex, earthy, slightly smoky character. Smooth and multifaceted – there's a distinctive, fresh, creamy, almost paint-like quality balanced by a subtle, sweet, spicy warmth. Faintly camphoraceous and green with a delicate, woody, vetiver-like depth. Subtly leathery and musky with a gentle, balsamic, slightly resinous undertone. Dense, grounding, and remarkably long-lasting – a unique, atmospheric, deeply earthy scent with extraordinary tenacity and complexity. Shares some characteristics with Indian cypriol/nagarmotha but has its own distinctive, fresher, creamier, more refined quality. One of the most interesting and unique aromatic materials to emerge from the Amazon region.
