Blood Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis)

Origin: Native to China and Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across Italy (particularly Sicily), Spain, the United States (California and Florida), Brazil, and other Mediterranean and subtropical regions. Sicily is the most renowned source for blood oranges. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind (peel) of the ripe fruit, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Blood orange is a natural variety of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) – the same species as regular sweet orange – distinguished by its characteristic dark red flesh, caused by the presence of anthocyanin pigments. The essential oil shares the same botanical name as sweet orange but has a subtly different, more complex scent profile influenced by the unique chemistry of the blood orange variety. The most notable blood orange cultivars include Moro, Tarocco, and Sanguinello, each with slightly different aromatic characteristics. Blood orange has been cultivated in the Mediterranean since the 17th century and is particularly associated with Sicilian aromatic and culinary traditions.

Scent: Sweet, bright, and richly citrusy with a warm, fruity, slightly berry-like character. Lush and vibrant – there's a distinctive, juicy, tangy, orange-like freshness balanced by a subtle, deep, raspberry-like, almost wine-like sweetness. Faintly floral and honeyed with a delicate, warm, zesty, peel-like depth. Richer, deeper, and more complex than regular sweet orange, with a distinctive, dark, fruity sweetness and a subtle, bitter, blood-like undertone. Vibrant, sensual, and beautifully nuanced – a luxurious, sophisticated citrus scent that is warmer, darker, and more complex than its sweet orange counterpart.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a rich, dark, citrus accent – adds a warm, fruity, berry-like depth and luxurious, sophisticated citrus quality to blends
  • A popular addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, bright, vibrant atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its rich, juicy, citrus character
  • Used in natural household products for its warm, sweet, fresh scent profile
  • Blends beautifully with bergamot, neroli, cinnamon, vanilla, ylang ylang, frankincense, sandalwood, lavender, clove, and cedarwood oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for citrus, fruity, gourmand, oriental, and festive compositions
  • Pairs exceptionally well with spice and gourmand materials for rich, warm, winter and holiday blends

Important Information:

  • For External Use Only
  • Blood orange essential oil is generally considered NOT phototoxic, unlike some other cold-pressed citrus oils – however, as with all cold-pressed citrus oils, it is advisable to exercise caution and avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure on skin for up to 12 hours after topical application as a precaution
  • Blood orange is a variety of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), not a separate species – ensure accurate labelling that clearly identifies the product as blood orange to distinguish from regular sweet orange oil
  • Always dilute with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin
  • Perform a patch test before use
  • Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness – citrus oils have a shorter shelf life than most essential oils and can oxidise over time. Oxidised oil is more likely to cause skin sensitivity
