Bergamot FCF Essential Oil (Citrus bergamia)

Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, now primarily cultivated in the Calabria region of southern Italy, which produces the vast majority of the world's bergamot oil. Also cultivated in parts of Ivory Coast, Argentina, Brazil, and Turkey. Italian Calabrian bergamot is considered the finest and most prized. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind (peel) of the nearly ripe fruit, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. FCF stands for "furocoumarin-free" – this oil has undergone an additional process (typically vacuum distillation or selective filtration) to remove the naturally occurring furocoumarins (primarily bergapten) that cause phototoxicity in standard cold-pressed bergamot oil. This makes FCF bergamot suitable for use in products that will be applied to skin exposed to sunlight, while retaining the full, characteristic bergamot scent. Bergamot is believed to be a hybrid, possibly between sour orange (Citrus aurantium) and lemon (Citrus limon) or lime (Citrus aurantiifolia), though its exact parentage remains debated. Bergamot has been one of the most important and widely used citrus oils in perfumery since the 18th century and is the signature ingredient in Earl Grey tea and eau de cologne.

Scent: Fresh, bright, and elegantly citrusy with a sweet, floral, slightly spicy character. Radiant and refined – there's a distinctive, sparkling, lemon-like freshness balanced by a subtle, warm, sweet, almost floral depth. Faintly green and herbaceous with a delicate, dry, peel-like, slightly peppery undertone. Subtly balsamic and tea-like with a gentle, warm, amber-like warmth. Light, elegant, and beautifully complex – a sophisticated, multifaceted citrus scent that bridges the freshness of lemon with the sweetness of orange and a delicate, lavender-like floral quality. FCF bergamot retains essentially the same scent profile as standard cold-pressed bergamot, with only a very slight reduction in complexity. One of the most refined, versatile, and universally admired citrus oils in perfumery.

Uses:

  • A cornerstone of natural perfumery – one of the most iconic, versatile, and widely used citrus materials, adding a bright, elegant, sparkling freshness and sophisticated depth to blends
  • A popular addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, bright, refined atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its elegant, fresh, citrus character
  • The preferred choice over standard bergamot for products intended for skin contact, due to its furocoumarin-free, non-phototoxic profile
  • A classic ingredient in eau de cologne formulations, where it has been used since the 18th century
  • Blends beautifully with lavender, jasmine, rose, neroli, frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, ylang ylang, and patchouli oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for citrus, fresh, floral, cologne, chypre, fougère, and oriental compositions
  • An exceptionally versatile oil that blends well with virtually every other essential oil family – citrus, floral, woody, resinous, herbaceous, and spicy

Important Information:

  • For External Use Only
  • FCF bergamot has had phototoxic furocoumarins (primarily bergapten) removed, making it non-phototoxic – this is the key distinction from standard cold-pressed bergamot oil, which is phototoxic.
  • Standard cold-pressed bergamot oil IS phototoxic
  • Despite being furocoumarin-free, always dilute with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin
  • May cause skin sensitivity in some individuals – always perform a patch test before use
  • Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness – citrus oils have a shorter shelf life than most essential oils and can oxidise over time. Oxidised oil is more likely to cause skin sensitivity
