Balm Mint Essential Oil (Prostanthera melissifolia)
Origin: Native to Australia, found in the temperate forests and woodlands of southeastern Australia, particularly Victoria and New South Wales. Australia is the sole source. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and terminal branches of the balm mint bush, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Prostanthera melissifolia is a member of the Australian native mint bush genus, which contains over 100 species, many of which are aromatic. The species name "melissifolia" means "lemon-balm-leaved," reflecting the plant's resemblance to true lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), though the two are unrelated beyond sharing the same broader family. Balm mint bush is distinct from other Prostanthera species such as Prostanthera rotundifolia (round-leaved mint bush) and Prostanthera cuneata (alpine mint bush), each with different scent profiles. It is a relatively rare and niche essential oil that has gained increasing recognition among artisan perfumers for its unique, complex, distinctly Australian character.
Scent: Fresh, bright, and sweetly herbaceous with a clean, minty, slightly balsamic character. Smooth and refined – there's a distinctive, lemon-balm-like, slightly citrusy freshness balanced by a subtle, warm, sweet, eucalyptus-like depth. Faintly floral and green with a delicate, soft, camphoraceous undertone. Subtly woody and earthy with a gentle, tea-like, almost lavender-like warmth. Elegant, complex, and beautifully balanced – a unique, multifaceted herbal scent that bridges the freshness of mint with the sweetness of lemon balm and the warmth of eucalyptus. A distinctive Australian native oil unlike any other material in perfumery.
