Angelica Root Essential Oil (Angelica archangelica)
Origin: Native to northern Europe and Scandinavia, particularly found across Norway, Iceland, Finland, and parts of Russia. Now widely cultivated in France, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, and other parts of Europe. France and Hungary are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried roots and rhizomes of the angelica plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. Angelica root oil is distinct from angelica seed oil, which is distilled from the seeds and has a different, lighter scent profile and chemical composition. The name "archangelica" is believed to originate from a legend that the plant was revealed by the Archangel Michael. Angelica has been valued in European aromatic and perfumery traditions since medieval times and remains a highly regarded ingredient in fine and artisan fragrance work.
Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply earthy with a complex, musky, herbaceous character. Bold and aromatic – there's a distinctive, sharp, peppery, almost bitter-green freshness that opens into a deep, woody, balsamic warmth. Subtly sweet and anise-like with a faint, smoky, leathery depth. Dense, grounding, and remarkably long-lasting – a powerful, multifaceted root scent with an almost animalic, musky quality that develops and evolves over time. One of the most complex and distinctive root oils available in perfumery.
Uses:
- Highly valued in natural perfumery as a rich, earthy, musky base – adds extraordinary depth, complexity, and a distinctive, rooty warmth to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, deep, grounding atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, complex, earthy character
- Blends beautifully with vetiver, patchouli, frankincense, cedarwood, bergamot, clary sage, juniper, grapefruit, sandalwood, and citrus oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for earthy, woody, oriental, chypre, and masculine compositions
- An exceptional fixative in blending – helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils in a composition
