Wild Brazilian Pepper Essential Oil (Schinus terebinthifolius)

Origin: Native to South America, primarily Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Now widely naturalised across tropical and subtropical regions including parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and the southern United States, where it is considered an invasive species in some areas. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried berries (fruit) of the Brazilian pepper tree, which belongs to the Anacardiaceae (cashew/sumac) family. Also known as aroeira, pink pepper tree, or Christmas berry, Schinus terebinthifolius is closely related to Peruvian pepper (Schinus molle) but is a distinct species with its own unique scent profile and chemical composition. The bright red-pink berries have been used in aromatic traditions across South America for centuries and the oil has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery.

Scent: Warm, bright, and delicately spicy with a fresh, peppery, slightly fruity character. Lively and aromatic – there's a distinctive, resinous, turpentine-like freshness balanced by a soft, sweet, berry-like warmth. Subtly green and woody with a faint, earthy, balsamic depth. Lighter and more fruity than black pepper, with a distinctive, pink, aromatic brightness. Vibrant, complex, and versatile – a unique, nuanced spice scent with a wild, untamed quality.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a bright, fruity, spicy accent – adds a distinctive, resinous warmth and an unusual, berry-like freshness to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, vibrant, subtly spicy atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, aromatic, fruity-spicy character
  • Blends well with black pepper, pink peppercorn, frankincense, bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood, ginger, cardamom, rose, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for spicy, woody, fresh, and contemporary compositions
  • A wild-harvested oil that adds a distinctive, untamed character not easily replicated with other materials
