Tangerine Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata var. tangerina)
Origin: Native to China and Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across the United States (particularly Florida and California), Brazil, Italy, and other subtropical regions. The United States is one of the largest producers. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind (peel) of the ripe fruit, which belongs to the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Tangerine is closely related to mandarin – in fact, the two names are often used interchangeably in the essential oil trade, though they are generally considered distinct varieties with subtly different scent profiles. Tangerine oil tends to be brighter, more vibrant, and slightly more tart than mandarin. It has a well-established place in perfumery and aromatic traditions.
Scent: Bright, sweet, and intensely citrusy with a vibrant, juicy, tangy character. Lively and radiant – there's a distinctive, zesty, sparkling brightness balanced by a soft, honeyed, candy-like sweetness. Slightly more tart and sharper than mandarin, with a faint, dry, peel-like undertone. Fresh, cheerful, and universally appealing – a bold, sunny, effervescent citrus scent that is more vibrant and punchy than its mandarin cousin.
